PLAGIOCEPHALY AND OSTEOAPTY, WITHOUT A BETTER HELMET!

Postural or positional plagiocephaly is a cranial deformity produced as a result of constant pressure on one part of the skull, preventing it from growing uniformly and one part being flattened, which is an increasingly common condition.

Today we will explain what the causes of plagiocephaly can be and as SOMSALUT, through pediatric osteopathy we can help your baby to correct it.

The causes can be:

  • The compressive forces exerted against the (soft) bones of the baby’s head before birth, as in the case of twins or as a result of an early descent into the pelvis.
  • A bad position in the womb during pregnancy.
  • Excessive forces exerted on the baby’s skull in some parts
  • The baby’s time in the supine position (mouth up) is too long.
  • That they sleep on their stomachs, on the one hand, has decreased the cases of sudden death in babies, but, on the other hand, it has increased the risk of suffering from plagiocephaly, since they spend too many hours compressing the same structures, which at that time they are easy to deform.
  • Congenital torticollis or postures in which the baby does not turn the head well to one side.

WHAT DOES THE PEDIATRIC OSTEOPATHIST DO?

In the examination that we carry out at SOMSALUT through pediatric osteopathy, we evaluate the severity of the injury through cranial measurements and carry out a detailed clinical history, in which we try to clarify the causes that have generated this dysfunction.

We ask the parents how the whole pregnancy developed, how was the birth and what are the daily postural habits of the baby. We then establish a plan of action and treat the baby’s skull using gentle, painless, and pleasant manual techniques.

During the session, we give the parents all the necessary explanations and recommendations for the baby to improve. In this type of injury, parents must help at home by putting into practice the advice we have given them so that the treatment is more successful.

It is very important to understand that each baby is unique and each treatment and advice provided by the professional is specific and personalized for each baby.

If you notice that your baby has difficulty turning his head to one of the two sides, that he seems to have some cranial asymmetry, such as one ear being further forward than the other, or anything that worries you, do not hesitate to call SOMSALUT A most of the time it’s about things with a quick and simple solution, but if we take too long to apply treatment it can worsen over time.
